A superb, brilliant and sagacious list of ways to communicate better

A superb, brilliant and sagacious list of ways to communicate better I saw this on Facebook, Im sure.  It is a list of 45 ways to avoid using the word very, and it is a MUST-READ. Why is this a must-read?  Not everyone here is a writer but everyone here is a communicator! This list is all about taking normal conversation and enhancing it.  The goal is not to confuse people with fancy words (like sagacious, which I would actually have to look up).  The goal is to have more impactful communication.  Say or write your message differently to have more impact!  Can you imagine being a job seeker in an interview, or a salesperson in front of a prospect, and being the most memorable because you were the most impactful? Its really that important.  Check out this brilliant list from Amanda Patterson in South Africa A superb, brilliant and sagacious list of ways to communicate better I saw this on Facebook, Im sure.  It is a list of 45 ways to avoid using the word very, and it is a MUST-READ. Better Questions Equal Better Networking Results - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Better Questions Equal Better Networking Results - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Because networking is the #1 way people find new jobs and advance their careers, in my last post I offered Five Ways to Improve Your Career Networking Results. One of the strategies I mentioned was to insure that the other person speaks more than you as this tends to build rapport faster and insure you dont dominate conversations. A second strategy I suggested was to make effective requests for action. Both of these strategies can successfully implemented by asking useful questions. Lets start with the first strategy getting the other person to talk more than you. Sometimes this can be challenging, especially if your companion is not much of a talker. The good news is that asking useful questions can save you from awkward silences and from monopolizing the conversation. Here are a few ideas for formulating helpful general questions: If you were introduced by someone, start by asking the person something related to the introducer, such as How long have you known Sandra? or What did Sandra tell you about me?. If you were not introduced and dont know the person, then you can rely on open-ended situational questions to get the ball rolling, such as What are you hoping to get out of this meeting? for a networking or industry/professional meeting or What campus activities were you involved in? for a college alumni meeting. Just try to avoid questions that can be answers with yes or no answers. Now, consider the second strategy making effective requests for action. The example I suggested in my last blog was Who do you know in any of my companies of interest? Would you be willing to make a personal introduction of me to them? This is a home run question to consider when you feel you have developed enough rapport and trust to ask directly for the introduction(s) you desire. Leading up to this, a question that models the action you desire from them might be Who would be good people for you to meet? Perhaps I may know someone who would be helpful for you. Questions can be powerful tools for building rapport and gaining introductions during your career networking. I hope you will find new ways to utilize them to have more useful conversations and achieve your career desires.

Generalizing about generations is good for you

Generalizing about generations is good for you One of the most popular posts here is What Generation are You? Take the Test. Im sure one reason its popular is that people like tests. We all want self-knowledge, but we want it handed to us on a silver platter, not thrown at us in clumps of dirt by our families, or served up with Kleenex at therapy. But the other reason I think that post is so popular is because people are generally indignant that they are pinned into a generation merely because of the date they were born. People dont like to be told they are similar to everyone else. But thats ridiculous, really. Because feeling special and different is a luxury only for those who are very mainstream. I can tell you, as a person who does not fit in that well, I work very hard to fit in. You think the eccentrics are trying to be eccentric, but they are not. Its not fun to be eccentric if you really are. Its only fun to be eccentric if you arent. So people dont like to be told that they are typical of their generation. They dont like to feel typical. They like to point out how they are different. Daniel Gilbert, professor of psychology at Harvard, has done a lot of research about how we are obsessed about our individuality. For example, most people think we are poor jugglers, but, of course, almost all of us are average jugglers. So it makes sense that people complain about being grouped by generation. One of the biggest complainers is Ben Cascnocha. Of course. Hes not a normal college kid. He started a business when he was 14, and he is in college thinking that maybe he could learn more out of college, and he generally shows up in places that you would not expect a 21-year-old to be. But even Casnocha is typical for his generation. For example, Gen Y is entrepreneurial, very self-confident, technology-focused, and socially responsible. So heres an idea, embrace the generational generalizations, and learn something about yourself. We all want self-knowledge, sure. But there is broad self-knowledge, about where you fit in history. Talking about generations is talking about history, as it happens. The speed of information is allowing us to see ourselves in history as we go. One great application of this is Baby Name Wizard, where you can see how your name fits in history. When was it popular? When did it tank? There is something about putting ourselves into an historical context that is fascinating. If you dont believe me, I dare you to click on that link and leave without typing in two or three names. Its impossible. So take a step back and look at yourself in historical context of your generation. Instead of bitching about how no one can completely fit into a generalization, fit yourself in, for a bit, and find new context. People ask me why I love writing about generations, and I tell them, all the time, that learning about Gen Y, and how to get along with them, has forced me to be more optimistic and has challenged me to be more self-confident. I am a typical Xer. Sure, Im eccentric, but I have several Gen X harbingers: Latchkey kid, cynical about stability, passion for grassroots, community action. By examining how I fit into the generations, I can see the larger context of myself and my community. And the larger a context you can see yourself in, the more varied your self-knowledge will be. When it comes to making choices in your life, you will make better choices with better self-knowledgeunderstanding how you are the same as other people. If you know how you are the same, you can leverage the knowledge and research what has come before you. You are probably an average juggler. You are probably part of your generation. You probably hate being told you are regular and typical. But let me tell you something. The best way to solve your career problems is to recognize that you are not the first to have them.

Podcast Therapy 5 Podcasts To Keep Your Head In The Job Game CareerMetis.com

Podcast Therapy 5 Podcasts To Keep Your Head In The Job Game Let’s face it: taking that next step on the career ladder isn’t easy. You can take lateral moves easily enough, but the difficulty ramps up quickly when you start trying to move up to the next rung â€" or even just get your foot on the ladder at all following a period of unemployment. Most frustratingly, it isn’t entirely under your control. Why Good Marketing Advice Can Lead You Astray - Kathy Caprino

Why “Good” Marketing Advice Can Lead You Astray A significant number of my awesome coaching and consulting colleagues and friends across the country have shared with me in the past year that they’ve hired outside marketing help with disappointing (or disastrous) results.   Despite finding “experts” who seem to have good reputations and produce solid results for others, my colleagues found that the marketing advice they received simply wasn’t effective or helpful. Curious as to deeper reasons behind the lack of efficacy of this marketing  help,  I asked my friends some questions about it: Did the marketing advice you get “feel” right to you when you got it Did you feel that the marketing expert really “got” you â€" understood you and respected where you were coming from, was supportive of you Was the marketing advice aligned with what you really believe, deep in your heart Did the advice honor your unique views, perspectives and experiences Did the copy, products and programs you were led to create feel like a natural outgrowth of you? Did the new website or program or free gift that you created with the marketing expert make you feel proud and happy with the end result? Did you feel equal in the relationship, or did you feel that they were the expert and you were the beginner? If the answer to any of these questions was “no,” it turns out that the marketing advice may have been sound, but it wasn’t RIGHT for them. The process of finding the right marketing support provider is exactly the same as going about finding the right doctor, financial consultant, virtual assistant, or other support professional.    It’s not enough that the individual has helped others, or has a “good reputation,” or seems successful.   There are skillions of folks who fit that bill. What does matter is that they are the right fit for you â€" that they are empowered supporters of you, and understand what you want, why you want it, and how you want to go about getting it.   It’s about process here, not just about content.   Further, it’s critical that you like and trust your helper.   If you follow the advice of someone you don’t like or respect, you subconsciously sabotage yourself and limit your success.   You’re telling yourself that despite this person feeling “off” to you, they must know better than you, and that you don’t know enough.   That core self-message undermines the entire outcome of what you’re trying to achieve â€" bringing about great, new aligned clients and customers whom you wish to serve. How to Choose the Right Helper for You Here are several key criteria that must be met in order for a marketing consultant or coach to be a good fit and to give you more than you pay for.   If you want to be pleased with the outcome, and find enlivening marketing support that helps you achieve the outcomes you want in ways that are aligned with who you are, ask yourself: Does the provider: Take into account your uniqueness and differences from others in your field Feel  in alignment with you, in terms of aesthetics, values, priorities, authenticity, communication, and style Want you to be happy with their services, and will do what is necessary for you to be more than satisfied? Have proven results with others who are like-minded with you? Have marketing materials, website, programs, and products that you feel are high-quality and high-content and that you’d like to emulate? Price their programs in a way that ensures you’ll generate significantly more money within a year from the outcomes of their support than you’ll pay them? Finally, does it feel “right” and “good” to work with this individual?   Does s/he empower you, or bring you down? Spending money wisely is a hallmark of successful individuals and business owners.   Please…think carefully before investing in outside support.   Make sure that your service providers are capable of helping you be all you wish to be in the world.   Feel free to say “no” when it’s not working.   Bring up your concerns and ask for change or resolution.   If you don’t get want you need, be prepared to walk away from the relationship when you sense that this partnership is not for you or for your highest good.   Don’t wait to ask for what you know you need and want. Are you spending money today in a support relationship that isn’t supportive?   Might today be the day to say “no more?”
